How I Met Your Father: the one where I went to Comic Con Africa

Kids, there comes a time in every superheroine’s life when she needs to step things up, to soar into an unknown stratosphere. For me, it was attending the very first Comic Con Africa in Johannesburg on Friday 14 September 2018.

I could wax lyrical for ages and ages about my experience but let me rather share the message I sent to your Spirt Mom Leonie and godfather Tendai about it instead:

“Arriving there this morning was like a treasure hunt on steroids ( because the Uber drop-off zone was k** far from the entrance and I had to work through an actual tunnel to get to the building).

After getting my media tag and the WiFi password, it was off to the main stage for the opening.

And the minute I walked through the single door to the main floor… damn, that high is hard to describe.

It’s Christmas morning, mixed with seeing the Statue of Liberty for the first time, mixed with the first time you hear the Game of Thrones theme song in the first episode of a new season.

This… this is what I have been waiting for my entire geek like. It was Heaven!”

I’ll let the videos and images below speak for themselves but trust me when I say I fell in love and I fell hard for Comic Con Africa that first day. It’s totally the reason why you guys, your Dad, your Nan and godfather Leon attend it with me to this day:

I came.I saw.I Comic Conned 😎In what can only be described as the culmination of all of my comicbook heiress and geek…

How I Met Your Father: The one with the ticking biological clock PT 2

Kids, in January 2018, random babies were literally throwing themselves at me…

At McDonald’s while I was chowing down a Happy Meal (quit judging me, HMs are like 20 bucks cheaper AND I was collecting toys for my younger cousin Israh… that’s my story and I am sticking to it!)

At Spar, when I was doing my evening shopping.

Those cute dimples, the curly hair, the womb-tugging giggles that rose from their little bellies as they delighted in my cooing at them.

These run-ins  constantly  had me fantasizing about dressing you guys up in Wonder Woman or Superman costumes for your first photo shoot…

My biological clock wasn’t ticking so much as it was imitating the Jumanji’s insane drumming schtick:

The only New Year’s resolution I’d made was that man or no man, come hell or high water, I was having you in 2020 and I knew I was working hard on my mind, body ( by restarting my ankle-interruptus running career) and soul ( more travel, less drama) to get to that goal.

Seeing adorable babies just made the need to have you a little too much to bear, my loves…

How I Met Your Father: No Date November

Kids, as you’ll recall, I hit the pause button on finding your Dad as a birthday present to myself in November 2017…One week and a bit into this experiment, things were going relatively well.

With my fingers getting a break from swiping left or right and my eyes lifted up and away from my phone screen, I was getting out and about in Cape Town.

Sure, I hit some bumps in the road like Mother Nature wreaking havoc on social outings:

But, this online dating detox also got me back into the habit of flirting with baristas at markets:

Him: “Enjoy your hot chocolate… maybe next time we can enjoy a coffee together?”

Me: “Only if it is as hot as you are”

Three minutes later, it was the next stall holder’s turn trying to engage me into a conversation about Wonder Woman, in relation to my wearing a branded t-shirt.

Getting hit twice in the space of minutes? Totally unheard of and I was loving it:

With every upswing, though, there has to be a downside too…

Sigh…

You’d think that with me being off dating apps, the sleazy DMs would stop but of course, I was still a magnet for online weirdos:

Lourens was clearly so turned on by my dismal walking pace on my Garmin Challenge tracker, he felt the need to say “How ya doin?” on the app AND by sending me a message on Facebook!

This wanna-be Casanova had no work place, address or content on his profile page, save for endless photos of a baby.

Oh hell no! Meet my little block button friend, brother… F*** it! NEXT!

How I Met Your Father : CT Girl in Brazil

Kids,in September 2017,I had the opportunity to travel to South America for work and it was epic!

Being a New York girl at heart with Paris,London and Bali on my immediate bucket list,South America wasn’t really on my radar until this business trip came up but boy,am I glad it did 🙂

Travel roadshows are four days of back to back presentations and meetings but I managed to sneak out for a bit of sightseeing in my first city,Curitiba where :

Wonder Woman reigns supreme

I nearly went nuts at the sight of this cute onesie at the local mall!

I’d have bought it there and then but you guys were still at least two years away from being born so sanity prevailed!

Fairytale palaces really exist

In the heart of Javim Botanical Gardens lies this picture perfect palace of a greenhouse and I fell deeply in love…

The Garden itself is beautiful and reminiscent of Central Park. I loved how locals and tourists alike roamed about and enjoyed the scenery, even during a work day!

Street art is love

My must-haves for cities I travel to are simple: food, magic, theatre shows and street art.

In Curitiba, street art is everywhere you go and this one was by far my favourite.

A relaxed vibe permeates everything in Curitiba – from the unhurried way people speak to their late meal times and more. I was learning to love this laidback way of life and I was sure I’d be back for more.

How I Met Your Father: the one where I suited up for #WonderWomanDay

Kids, with #WonderWomanDay being celebrated on Saturday 3 June, 2017, in honour of the ultimate female superhero’s 75 year anniversary and the release of her first live motion film, it was only a matter of time before I dusted off my Amazon Princess suit and took to the streets of Cape Town in it…

Ok, maybe not the streets – but definitely to Readers Den, my home away from home since age 5, for their Wonder Woman Day event:

There, I hung out with well-known cosplayer, Sascha Perdigao, who rocked the Bombshell Wonder Woman look:

After supporting my magical family at our sold-out shows at the Artscape Theatre that day, I joined your Auntie Bennii for our must-do live action Wonder Woman NuMetro VIP screening at Canal Walk.

I love that when I said I was attending the screening in my suit, your Auntie B didn’t hesitate to do the same:

Of course, it wouldn’t be a House of Wyrd night out  if we didn’t take to social media about it, right?

The lesson here, my beautiful babies, is to always surround yourself with amazing friends who love you for your weird, imaginative self…Blessed are the freaks and Wyrdos!

How I Met Your Father: The one where I got my full geek on with Wonder Woman cosplaying

Kids, by now you know that I am weird and I own that s*** like a superhero. Wonder Woman, to be exact.

Faz Wonder Woman

So it should come as no surprise that when I heard the comic book store I virtually grew up in, Readers Den, would present a local version of the Nirvana of Geekdom, Comic Con to the Mother City as FanCon Cape Town; I decided to suit up and have a Wonder Woman costume designed.

You’ve seen the cool as ice photos of my and your Spirit Mom’s Game of Thrones cosplaying, but did you know my dress-up antics date back all the way to the 80s?

1985/ 1986 …

The story goes that your Grandpops was desperate for a son after two daughters from his previous marriage and because he was a huge, and I mean, HUGE Superman fan, he was determined to create a costume for his heir.

Luckily for him, your Nan was crazy about knitting and geek boys so whilst he drew the Kryptonian emblem, she crocheted a blue, red and yellow onesie, complete with a cape to accompany it.

Except …

Their last ultrasound revealed that I was, well, me … and the doctor turned to them to say:

“As it turns out, Superboy is actually Supergirl”

I “flew” into your super grandparents ‘lives two months earlier than expected and had to spend several weeks in an incubator so my lungs could grow.

Two months after they took me home and I had grown to a satisfying size and weight, your Nan and Grandpops suited me up for my first ever cosplaying session … meet the Girl of Steel:

dad and supergirl

2016 …

Fast forward some 30 years later and Supergirl had evolved into Wonder Woman.

I had loved Gal Godot as the Amazon heroine in Batman vs Superman and was determined to rock her modern look because it was a sure bet no one else was going to (patterns for the new costume were hard to find on the internet).

Yeah, the skirt was short and the look required LOTS of skin to be shown but f*** it, you only live once, right?!

When I told your Nan about my plans, she was more excited than I was and promptly took me shopping (her favourite activity!) for material and accessories.

Luckily for me, because I loathe shopping like a cat hates bathing, we found all of the material we needed to bring Wonder Woman to life at Fabric City in the City Centre.

Keeping your grandmother in check as we searched for toy swords and shields was like trying to contain an over-stimulated child in a candy store so I let her run rampant 😉

Wonder woman basic material

The material paired with the corset I’d commissioned from fellow cosplayer Candice-Lynne Barker, left me satisfied I had everything we needed to breathe life into my iconic character. I reached out to your Great Aunts Shamiela and Shanaaz and their back-up team at the Bernina sewing shop in Claremont for assistance in creating the costume.

Several fittings, late night sessions and tons of comparing it to the movie look, I could shimmy into my suit and blow fellow cosplayers away at Fan Con.

Your Aunts Sam and Mishka joined in on the dress up fun as Harley Quinn and Catwoman ( yes, yes, I know, how can two DC Comics  villains hang out with a Justice League member, but we made it work!):

FanCon itself was such a mind-trip and it was so amazing to be able to roam about with other like-minded people, exchanging compliments on costumes, ideas on characters and thoughts on movie adaptations of our favourite comics and graphic novels.

Having your Nan, Great-Grams and your Great Aunt there to support me was also a ground-breaking moment in finally being accepted as the Wyrdo  I was.

wonder woman and family

Sharing the stage for a cosplay competition with other contestants was thrilling but I still had time for one more costume change…

Faz Khaleesi 2016

FINALLY! Khaleesi Fazielah could claim her Iron Throne 😉

What, you may ask, has this got to do with meeting your father? Well. Kids, as my own parents proved, there is a handsome geek for every Wonder Woman and mine would do a superhero landing in my life pretty soon. You guys listening to my wacky adventures are proof of that!
